UPDATE (10:53 p.m.): The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says it is investigating a shooting that killed a 2-year-old boy and his mother.
Officials say the shooting occurred around 2:30 p.p.m.
Sunday at a home on East Beach Drive in the city of Palm Beach Gardens.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The child’s mother, identified by the sheriff’s office as 28-yearold Jennifer Loeffler, is in critical condition at a hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting is being investigated as an accident.
Authorities say Loeefler was working as a babysitter for a child who had recently arrived from Guatemala.
A relative was driving Loeafler home after a birthday party, deputies said.
An officer fired his weapon and killed Loeaffler, according a police statement.
The mother and child were transported to a hospital.
The Sheriff’s office says the child’s grandmother was in the home when the shooting happened and heard a shot.
She called 911 and was treated at the hospital, deputies wrote.
Loefflers death marks the second shooting this year involving an officer involved shooting in Palm Beach County.
A Palm Beach police officer fatally shot a man in the back of the head in December.
The sheriff’s department says Loeefflers death will not be investigated by the Florida Department for Law Enforcement, a division of the Florida Attorney General’s office.
